    Lucille Hamons's legendary hospitality inspired Route 66 motorists to nickname her the “Mother of the Mother Road”. She was known for her friendly assistance to travelers, her great food, and the “coldest drinks in the state of Oklahoma.” Lucille ran her service station, diner, and hotel for over 60 years along this famous highway in Hydro, Oklahoma. The service station itself stands as part of a unique and bygone era. Built around the time Route 66 became a highway, Lucille’s was originally called the “Provine Station” representing the Bungalow Craftsman style that was popular during that time period. The service station features an open bay supported by tapered pillars and vintage gas pumps. Customary of such architecture, Lucille and Carl Hamons lived in the upper story of the station with their 3 children.

  • Stafford Air and Space Museum

    The Stafford Air and Space Museum is named in honor of famed astronaut, Lt. General Thomas P. Stafford. Stafford was born in 1930 and raised in Weatherford, OK. His mother came to Oklahoma in a covered wagon and lived to see her only child fly to the moon. Stafford was selected by NASA in the second group of astronauts in 1962. He would fly four historic space missions (Gemini 6, Gemini 9, Apollo X, and Apollo-Soyuz), three of them as mission Commander. For his efforts as Commander of the U.S and Soviet joint Apollo-Soyuz mission, Stafford received a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Stafford is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the Oklahoma Aviator of the Century award.

    Named a Smithsonian Affiliate in 2011, the museum houses over 63,000 sq. ft. of exhibits under one roof and showcases thousands of items representing the evolution of aviation and spaceflight. Examples include, an actual Titan II rocket, General Stafford’s actual-flown Apollo 10 pressure suit, a museum-quality, full-scale replicas of an Apollo Command & Service Module and Lunar Module, an actual F-1 Engine Turbine Wheels from Apollo 11, an actual F-1 engine from the Saturn V, General Stafford’s actual-flown Gemini VI-A spacecraft, an actual-flown Shuttle Main Engine, an actual-flown segment of a Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster, an actual F-86 Sabre, A-10 Warthog, a rare and actual MIG-21 and so much more. Situated just outside the museum’s front entrance, one of the most revolutionary aircraft ever built, the Lockheed F-104 “Starfighter,” points majestically six stories straight up into the sky! The museum’s outdoor display has become an iconic monument for the region.

    The museum has been named a Blue Star Museum which means all active-duty military receive FREE admission to the museum from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day.

    Situated just outside the museum’s front entrance, one of the most revolutionary aircraft ever built, the Lockheed F-104 “Starfighter,” has become an iconic monument for the region and points six stores straight up into the sky!

    The museum is located along Route 66 at I-40 and Exit 84 in Weatherford, and welcomes visitors seven days a week, 360 days a year. (Closed: Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day).

  • Wind Energy Park

    Located across from city hall, the park features an actual blade, 122 feet long, from a wind turbine and a brief description of the wind energy industry. Actual wind turbines can be seen from I-40. The project will ultimately encompass as many as 98, 1.5 megawatt wind turbines, covering more than 5,000 acres in Custer County.
